This might sound like a really simple thing – why do I need an itinerary?! Well, you don’t, but if you’re anything like me then you might prefer to have one. And this is particularly handy in places where the language is not as easy to understand.
An itinerary can help you make the most of your trip by planning in all the things you want to do. It means that you can map out your days (especially if your time is limited!) and group tasks together to ensure you tick everything off your list.
I often spend a lot of time planning, but I have always thanked myself for it later because I feel a little more prepared and in control when I get there. I am, admittedly, a control freak and I cannot be spontaneous so this page may not apply to some of you that can live life on the edge! Typically, what I would include are details such as:
- Hotel name/reservation details
- Relevant transport links to/from the airport that you will be using
- Key stops (e.g. closest bus/tram/metro stop to your accommodation)
- Rough conversion rates of the money
- Key words and phrases in the language of country you are visiting (often I want to know the words for please/thank you/milk/cheese/eggs and so on)
- Sights to see and things to do
- Places to shop (I love a shopping centre.. or three!)
- Places to eat (often important to research beforehand, I have found, unless you are lucky enough to be in some sort of vegan utopia)
- A good map (but these are often available at the airport or tourist information centres when you arrive should you not find a useful one online)
